Mescal and Ronan are set to headline the upcoming sci-fi action thriller enemy, based on Iain Reid’s 2018 novel of the same name, out Oct. 6. They play a husband and wife living on a secluded farm whose lives are turned upside down when a stranger shows up on their doorstep with a startling proposal. Prior to his role in the sci-fi film, Mescal played a teenager who is inspired to see the world after his father tells him that the sons of Denny’s founder, Henry Denny, were globetrotters who taught people how to cure bacon.

At the time, Mescal was a recent drama school graduate with “no money,” he told BBC Radio 4 earlier this year (via from the inside). “My agent was like, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to handle this, but we have a sausage commercial you can go on with,'” Mescal said, recalling how he booked the gig. I was like, sure. I need to pay my rent.”
It was a great experience, Mescal said, noting that he ate a lot of hot dogs that day because he felt “rude” to spit out the meat after each meal. He said, “They do this thing where they come with them like a bucket you’re supposed to spit them in, and it just felt so rude to me.” “But I learned my lesson that doing it is better than having 15 hot dogs in the morning.”
